St Mary's Church Beaminster is a town in Dorset on the A3066 between Bridport and Crewkerne. It is in the valley of the River Brit. It is famous for the Beaminster Festival, an annual nine-day music and art festival. During the civil war Beaminster declared for Parliament, and was sacked by Royalist forces in 1644. The town did not get a railway and so remained in its small state, and today has a population of 2,936. Today, the whole of the historic Beaminster town centre is a conservation area, with over 200 listed buildings.

Glorious walks abound, for Beaminster stands at the head of Dorset's "Hidden Valley" the historic Vale of the River Brit, whose tranquil beauty hides rare flowers, badger's setts and old water mills. A charter was granted in 1284 for a weekly market all day Thursday and a three-day annual fair in September, and by the end of medieval times the agricultural settlement had certainly grown into a little town, with a stepped cross in the centre of its market-place. Prosperity came to Beaminster through the manufacture of wool cloth and in the 17th century there was a fine market house on stone arched pillars. Hemp and flax manufactures also developed sailcloth, sackcloth, shoe-thread, rope and twine. Many other small industries were carried on, for example paper-making, printing, potteries and metal-working, but the buildings have since been pulled down or adapted for different uses. Every year Beaminster holds a Music Festival, this year is the 13th Beaminster Festival of Music and the Visual Arts, St. Mary's Church, in the heart of Beaminster, is the focus for all the classical concerts.
There will be lots of visual arts
to attract the visitor, and an Art Trail which gives an
opportunity to explore the town of Beaminster. The
Museum hosts an Exhibition of Illustrations of
Coleridge's: The Rime of The Ancient Mariner; two
Exhibitions of Photography and an Exhibition of Textiles
created by local artists.
Rosie Boycott launches the festival celebrations at Noon on Saturday 28th June. For more detailed information visit:-
